Shortlist Honesty: Judging Your Own Set Before Anyone Else Does

Every sitting produces more frames than it should publish. The temptation is to chart all of them — they were paid for, after all, in credits or in check-in days. The desk resists, because audiences judge a catalogue by its weakest visible entry, not by its average. A shortlist is only worth keeping if the cull behind it was honest. What follows is the cull the desk applies to its own work, in the order the verdicts are given.

The four verdicts

Off character. Compare the frame against the chart card before anything else is judged. If the woman in the frame is not the woman on the card, no amount of lighting saves the entry. It goes to the drawer, or back for a face swap if the pose earned rescuing.

Off brief. The frame may be beautiful and still wrong: the outfit belongs to another pack, the room contradicts the series, the light belongs to a different hour. A set is a promise kept in sequence; an off-brief finalist breaks the sequence even when it shines alone.

Technically flawed. Hands, joins, small props, the edges of hair. Judge at full size, not as a thumbnail — the thumbnail is a defence lawyer that forgives everything. Flaws that survive at full size will be found by the audience at full size.

Redundant. Two finalists saying the same thing keep only the stronger one. Redundancy is the quietest way a chart fills with entries nobody remembers.

The drawer is part of the system

Culled frames are not deleted; they rest private in the account. A pose in the drawer can be rescued by an edit, a swap or a re-grade when a later set needs it. What the drawer never does is publish itself. The discipline is simple to state and hard to keep: everything is produced, few things are charted, fewer still are shown. Producers who chart honestly find their keepers getting stronger, because every new sitting is judged against a list that was never padded.
